DL-tartaric acid is a synthetic form of tartaric acid, a white crystalline dicarboxylic acid found naturally in plants like grapes and tamarinds. It's used in food as an acidulant and leavening agent, in industry as a metal processing agent, and in pharmaceuticals. Unlike natural L-tartaric acid, DL-tartaric acid is a racemic mixture of enantiomers and is optically inactive.
