• Process: Uses an oxidizing acid solution (like nitric acid or citric acid) to create a protective, self-healing layer that can reform if scratched. 
• Outcome: Does not alter the surface appearance but significantly improves the steel's resistance to rust and corrosion. 
• When it's used: As the final treatment, especially before a stainless steel product enters service. 

Why Both Are Necessary

• Pickling and passivation are often performed together after stainless steel fabrication because welding creates surface damage that reduces its corrosion resistance.
